Crochet Giraffe Pattern

Here is my pattern for my little Giraffe. This is the first crochet pattern I’ve written, so I hope that it’s ok. I’m the master of dropping or gaining stitches, so don’t worry if you do too.
Also, I’m sorry if any of the final quantities of stitches aren’t quite right, I wouldn’t worry too much if it’s 24 not 26 etc. I made him up as I went along, so I just hope he looks ok for everyone. Have fun .

PS: I am writing this pattern for free, if you are new to my little Blog maybe you could start following me. It's always nice to get new readers

*Cotton /Acrylic yarn. I used a couple of different types of yarns with slightly different thicknesses. It still turned out ok.

    1. Hey, I used a bodkin and sewed the head to the body first. I sewed the ends of the legs and arms together and then sewed them to the body. The ears I folded in and sewed them together and then sewed them to the head.
      Hope this helps :)

    1. Hey Jackie,
I crocheted in the rounds so you can see the change at the back. When I had to change the colour I just changed the colour and kept going. I tied them off at the back (inside of the limbs)so dont worry about threading the end bits of the yarn to make it neat. I hope this is what you meant. Hope it helps x

    1. Hi Muriel, I am so sorry but it turns out I made a mistake on the neck. R23 should be sc26 and the rest of the neck the same sc26 not 12. I feel terrible as I really thought I had checked it. It has been change now, maybe if you take the head off and unstich the neck and redo. So sorry again.

  34. Its such a sweet giraffe... i am new to crocheting and now trying to do this but i have a problem: at First the head seems to small - are you sure you only did 7 rows in white?

And then i wanted to ask how you did sew it all together? Especially the ears ?

Thank you so much for the pattern!

You have a follower more from europe(vienna)

  35. Oh god, you may be right. Someone else found a mistake too.(the neck is 26sc not 12). I counted mine and it is off by 2 rows, so 9 rows of white. So sorry I will change it, Thank you for that. Its my first pattern and I am also blaming baby brain.
Also I just pinched together the ears so the ends meet. I sewed them togther first, then sewed them on. For the limbs I just sewed the ends togther then sewed them on where I thought they looked ok and even. The head I just sewed on where I thought it looked even.

    Thanks for the feedback

  36. Hi Emma,

I just looove this giraffe pattern and my 1 year old just won't take his hands off of his new toy!

Many of my friends and family actually want to start crocheting now because they, too, fell in love with Olli (thats the name I gave my giraffe). But, in order to do so, they asked me to translate the pattern into German and I was wondering if that was OK with you.

Also, I'm planning on opening my own crafts blog with patterns of my own creation, links to and translations of originally English patterns and I would like to post the German version of the giraffe pattern in this blog (with your name and a link to your original English pattern, of course!) would that be OK?

    Thx

Sorry only just saw your comment, thats fine. I'm glad he turned out for you, I've had a little bit of trouble with the writting of the pattern and was worried how he was going to turn out for people. The main thing is he has been loved. My mum knitted me a 3 legged cat as she ran out of yarn, I love that thing 3 legs and all.

  47. The math on the head isn't working out properly.
    You have (starting from R12)-
    R12: Sc 36
    R13: Sc 6, 2 sc in next sc, rep 5 times (40)

    * 6 sc, inc x5 is going to get you 41 stitches.

    R14: Sc 6, 2 sc in next sc, rep 6 times (48)

*6 sc, inc x6 is going to get you 47 stitches.
    15-17- sc 48
*which should actually be 47, but that won't make sense when it comes decrease time*

    R18: Sc 6, dec 1, rep 6 times (40)
*Even in the original directions, you can't go from 48 to 40 in 6 decreases.*

    R19: Sc 4, dec 1, rep 6 times (36)
    *Can't go from 40 to 36 in 6 decreases*

    R20: Sc 3, dec 1, rep 6 times (30)
*Here it does make sense to go from 36 to 30 in 6 decreases*

    R21: Sc 2, dec 1, rep 6 times (22)
*But if you're doing 6 decreases, it should come out to 24*

    R22: Sc 1, dec 1, rep 6 times (12)
*And if it comes out to 24, you should be doing sc, dec x 6 to get 18*

    R23: Dec 1, rep 6 times (6)
*You should decrease around here to get to 12*

Then there should probably be another line telling you to decrease again all around to get to 6 stitches.

    1. Ok, I will have a look. As I said this is my first pattern and made it up as I went. I am new at writing a pattern and there has been a couple of mistakes found.

      Thanks for letting me know

      Delete
    2. No problem, I know it's a difficult process and it's really nice of you to even post a free pattern!

I have one more fix, the body-

      R22: Sc 4, dec 1, rep 6 times (36)
      Change colour (tan)
      R23: Sc 2, dec 1, rep 6 times (26)

Can't go from 36 to 26 in 6 decreases, you'd have to go from 36 to 30 first if you want it to be even. So the neck should probably actually be 30sc, which would also make it a tad bit more sturdy.

      Delete
  48. That being said, here's the rewritten head pattern to fit more in line with typical amigurumi shaping.

    R1- 6sc magic ring
    R2- increase all - 12
    R3- sc, inc- 18
    R4- 2sc, inc- 24
    R5- 3sc, inc - 30
    R6- 4 sc, inc- 36
    R7-12- 36 sc
    R13- 5sc, inc - 42
    R14- 6sc, inc- 48
    R15-17- sc 48
    R18- 6 sc, dec - 42
    R19- 5 sc, dec- 36
    R20- 4 sc, dec- 30
    R21- 3 sc, dec- 24
    R22- 2sc, dec- 18
    R23- sc, dec- 12
    R24- dec around- 6

It might just be coincidence or you had the picture of wilmas giraffe in your head somewhere, and designed yours unknowing you are copying hers. We all get our inspirations from somewhere and nothing is new under the sun I guess. If you are unfamiliar with her work you should def. check her out, she makes the cutes crochet animals and dolls.

    2. Hello, first of all it's a lovely giraffe :) Thank you very much. Secondly I would suggest to agree because I found some miscounting while making the head (the number didn't fit from the third colour despite the white one), it also didn't close very well so I had to add more lines and colours in the end of the head. I do realize that it is a very hard job to write a pattern down so I really do appreciate your work because I love this giraffe and in general it is a very nicely made pattern. I haven't seen a better giraffe so far :) I will link you my giraffe when I am done with it. Also I expected it to be bigger but that is my problem. It is still very cute :) Good luck and I hope that you won't stop making nice things and patterns. Wish you lots of inspiration :) You did a great job :)

    1. Hi Ruth,
I have done it as 6, but if you want them a bit thicker make them 8. Also depending on how long you want them you can add or subtract some rows. And they stiffen up when you stuff them.
Hope it turns out ok, sometimes you can play around patterns.
      Thanks

  64. Thanks Emma for sharing this pattern. I made just a couple of adjustments to the pattern and only in the Body section.

    R20: Sc 6, dec 1, rep 6 times (48)
    Change colour (Green)
    R21: Sc 5, dec 1, rep 6 times (42)
    R22: Sc 4, dec 1, rep 6 times (36)
    Change colour (tan)
->> I would think Row 23 should be: SC2, Dec1, rep 6 times would give you 30 stitches
    R23: Sc 2, dec 1, rep 6 times (26)
->> I then added Row 24 in Tan to have 2 rows of tan instead of 1.This row would be SC1, DEC1 repeat 6 times to give a final row count of 24.
then the rest of the rows would be 24 count instead of 26.

Otherwise I followed your pattern to a T and I was happy with how it turned out. I referenced your blog in mine.

  65. This is so adorable! My SIL is due any day now & the nursery theme is giraffes. I would love to make this for her but I have only recently started crocheting and I'm not sure I can do this! I see many people have made it, but I'm just not sure. This is the first time I've been on your blog, saw this on Pinterest! I will keep trying to talk myself into it..... www.mamamging.com

  66. Emma, thank you for this gorgeous Giraffe pattern!
Not quite sure my crochet is up to it, I'm more of a knitter, but, I love giraffes and I think it'd be worth giving a go. Your whole blog is very inspiring!
    Thanks!!!
    Larysa.
(PS, just to let you know, there's a typo in your main header picture - it should just be 'I love buttons', not 'button's', but the picture itself is lovely - did you create it? )

  68. He's very adorable. I made him and posted a picture on my blog and am getting tons of questions about making him for friends and family. I saw your note about not selling the item. Is it a problem to sell them once finished? Thanks so much for the pattern.

  69. Hallo Emma,

Your pattern is almost the same as my pattern. It looks like if you have translated it.

    1. Hi Tineke,
I can honestly say I haven't seen your pattern before. If you have a look at my blog I always reference where I find my inspiration, so I would have done this if I had have seen yours, and not made a pattern. I have had a look at your blog and you have made many wonderful things and have made some lovely crochet creations.

  70. It's weird people are commenting that she's taken or copied their pattern. I've seen the other patterns. Its typical amigurumi arms, legs and body etc. And a giraffe looks like a giraffe. I've seen other ami giraffes that are just that ami giraffes. That's like saying you copied my strawberry short cake recipe based on basic ingredients. The colors and shape are what i think makes him different and distinct. Sorry ladies I'm not convinced she ripped off a pattern. It's ami-adorable. I appreciate the inspiration.

    3. Thank you both, I hadn't seen the others before and really just wanted to make a giraffe for my niece as they are cute. I was asked many times for a pattern so I gave it a go. If I had copied it there wouldn't be so many mistakes in it. Thanks again for your support, sometimes I dread looking at the comments now.

  73. OHMYGOSH!!!!!!! THANK YOU SO MUCH for this pattern! How sweet of you to take the time to write a pattern and share it for free! I'm making this for my nephew who will be here any day now! I am on a VERY tight budget and can't thank you enough for sharing this for free.
I hope the negative and rude comments don't prevent you from sharing other patterns. I think you're great!

  74. Hi Emma,

Thanks for this cute patter. I am new to crocheting but, I have to say, it was quite easy to follow. I will try to post a picture but, being pretty bad with computers and stuff, I am not sure I will be able to do it.
Since I do travel a,lot for work, I might decide to take Genoveffa (this is the name of the giraffe) with me and take pictures of her in the different destinations....
    Anyway thanks so much!

  75. Hi Emma
I made a giraffe for a baby shower. My children picked the colours. I would love to send you the picture, but am not sure how. I will post it on Ravelry.
The other giraffe is my own pattern, from Noah's Ark, I booklet with crochet patterns I designed recently. I found your pattern easy to follow, although I adapted the stripes so that the giraffe turned out somewhat bigger.

  76. I loved your giraffe as soon as I saw it and decided to make one for both of my two children. I used Sirdar Snuggly Smiley Stripes DK and have just finished my daughter's one (picture at http://m.flickr.com/#/photos/nancyloustitches/) I did use some of the corrections in the comments section My son's one will be in the same yarn but in a blue/green colourway. I loves hers and has called it Tina. She has already called T's one George, even though I haven't started it yet! Thank you so much for writing and sharing your pattern.

  77. Sorry, link above is not good. This one is better: http://www.flickr.com/photos/nancyloustitches/8692422862/in/photostream George the giraffe is started, but might morph into an elephant along the way >:o)

  78. Was für eine süße Giraffe! Da ich nicht so gut in englischer Sprache bin, werde ich das Tierchen mal im "Freistil-Häkeln" versuchen. Danke für die hübsche Idee! Jetzt hast du eine Leserin mehr!

  81. OMG every one that made one, they are adorable! THANKS so much Emma for sharing the pattern. Please do not get discouraged by the negative comments as Denise hit the nail on the head with her comment. I am new to crocheting and I have had this pattern pinned for a while but I'm scared to try it. I'm jealous you guys made one! Maybe someday I will muster up the courage..... :)

  83. I have just posted a picture of the giraffe I made using your pattern over on Amigurumi Freely on facebook. I used Planet Penny Cotton from here http://planetpenny.co.uk/rainbow-cotton-yarn/ I was really pleased with the way he turned out. He now lives with my daughter as she sent me a link to your blog so I could make him :) Thanks for sharing your pattern :) I'm now going to share him on my fb page as I've been meaning to do it for ages.
